Power Ranch Golf Club sells for $17.1 million
Long before Thompson Golf Group became one of the country's premier golf course owners and operators, it was simply a farming family with a vision.
Founder Greg Thompson grew up on a family farm in Alexandria, Minnesota, where hard work, land stewardship, and entrepreneurship shaped his early years. After building a successful career in business, Thompson combined his passion for golf with his agricultural roots by transforming family farmland into what would become Geneva Golf Club. Construction began after the Thompson family relocated to Alexandria in 1998, and the course officially opened in the spring of 2000. What started as a single golf course quickly became the foundation for a growing golf company.
The success of Geneva Golf Club led to additional opportunities. Over the following years, Thompson Golf Group expanded by acquiring, developing, and managing golf courses across several states. The company built a reputation for exceptional course conditions, outstanding customer service, and creating golf experiences that appealed to players of all skill levels.
As the portfolio grew, so did the company's presence in Arizona. Thompson Golf Group eventually became the owner and operator of three of the Valley's best-known public golf courses:
- Longbow Golf Club (North Mesa) — $23.5 million
- Power Ranch Golf Club (Gilbert) — $17.1 million
- Dove Valley Ranch Golf Club (Cave Creek) — $16.4 million
The three-course portfolio sold for a combined $57 million, making it one of the Valley's larger golf real estate transactions this year.
Each course earned a loyal following among local golfers, visitors, leagues, and tournaments, helping establish Thompson Golf Group as one of the Southwest's most respected golf operators.
Now, after years of growing its Arizona portfolio, the company has sold all three courses to New Jersey-based The Walden Group. While ownership has changed, golfers shouldn't expect major changes. Under a multi-year management agreement, Thompson Golf Management will continue overseeing daily operations, course maintenance, tournaments, food and beverage, and the overall guest experience at all three facilities.
It's a remarkable story of growth—from a family farm in rural Minnesota to managing and operating some of the country's premier public golf courses. Although ownership of the Arizona properties has changed, the Thompson team that built their reputation will continue caring for the courses, ensuring the legacy they created remains intact.
