New $1.2 Million Land Purchase Paves Way for Youth Performing Arts Center in Gilbert
A new performing arts center is moving through the development process in Gilbert, with plans to bring a dedicated youth theater and creative arts facility near Downtown Gilbert.
The Steele Performing Arts Center is currently in the Town of Gilbert's design review process for a proposed 8,098-square-foot building on a 1.11-acre property located at 636 N. Gilbert Road.
The organization purchased the land in 2024 for $1,200,000, setting the stage for a development focused on providing young performers with opportunities to learn, rehearse, and showcase their talents.
What's Planned for the Property?
The proposed development includes a 120-seat youth theater designed to accommodate live performances and educational programming.
In addition to the main theater, the facility would include dedicated spaces for rehearsals, set production, administrative offices, and concessions.
The goal is to create more than just a place to watch performances. The Steele aims to provide a permanent home where young artists can develop their skills and gain experience in the performing arts.
The facility is also envisioned to feature advanced technology, including immersive LED stage backdrops, 3D spatial audio, and real-time tracking systems that allow lighting and visual effects to follow performers throughout a production.
Bringing Broadway-Level Experiences to Gilbert
The Steele has outlined plans to offer live and virtual master classes led by Hollywood and Broadway instructors, giving local students access to professional-level instruction.
The nonprofit organization also emphasizes accessibility through scholarships and subsidized classes, with the goal of expanding performing arts opportunities for young people and families.
The organization's website currently advertises 135 seats, while the design-review information identifies a 120-seat theater.
When Will The Steele Open?
The organization is targeting a 2027 opening.
However, the project remains in the Town of Gilbert's design review process, and a confirmed construction start date and grand opening date have not been announced.
If completed, The Steele would introduce another dedicated arts destination near Downtown Gilbert, complementing the town's existing entertainment and cultural offerings while focusing specifically on youth development.
With a $1.2 million land investment already made and plans now moving through the town's review process, the proposed performing arts center represents another potential addition to Gilbert's growing arts and entertainment scene.
