Walmart Looking To Bring Drone Deliveries To Mesa

by KEVIN MCKIERNAN

The future of shopping may soon be flying into Mesa.

The City of Mesa has recently received permit applications for drone delivery infrastructure at five Walmart locations throughout the city, signaling that the retail giant is preparing for the possibility of launching drone deliveries in the East Valley.

The locations included in the permit filings are:

• 1955 S Stapley Dr
• 6131 E Southern Ave
• 240 W Baseline Rd
• 1606 S Signal Butte Rd
• 1710 S Greenfield Rd

If approved, the program would allow customers to order select Walmart items online and have them delivered by drone directly to their home in a matter of minutes. Walmart has been rapidly expanding drone delivery service across the country and has already completed hundreds of thousands of deliveries in markets where the technology is active.

While the permit applications do not guarantee service will begin immediately, they represent one of the clearest signs yet that Walmart is planning for drone operations in Mesa. The delivery radius from these five locations could potentially cover a large portion of Mesa, as well as parts of Gilbert and Apache Junction.

Drone deliveries are typically limited to smaller items such as groceries, household essentials, medications, and last-minute convenience purchases. Orders are loaded into autonomous drones and flown directly to a customer's property, often arriving significantly faster than traditional delivery methods.

As drone technology continues to gain acceptance and regulatory approvals expand, Mesa could soon become one of the first cities in Arizona to see widespread drone delivery service from Walmart.

We'll continue tracking the permits and provide updates as more information becomes available.
