Ocotillo Bridge Project Reaches 75% Completion in Gilbert
One of Gilbert’s largest transportation projects is taking shape in South Gilbert. The extension of Ocotillo Road between Greenfield and Higley roads is now 75% complete, with construction expected to finish in fall 2026.
The $112 million project will create a new 0.85-mile east-west connection and provide more direct access to the 272-acre Gilbert Regional Park. Once completed, the roadway is also expected to improve traffic flow, emergency response times and connectivity throughout South Gilbert.
What Is Included in the Project?
The project includes three vehicle bridges and one box culvert crossing several major waterways, including the Roosevelt Water Conservation District Canal, East Maricopa Floodway, Chandler Heights Regional Basin and Queen Creek Wash.
The new roadway will also feature dedicated pedestrian bridges, sidewalks, improved bicycle access, upgraded traffic signals and future connections to additional trails.
One of the most noticeable features will be the signature bridge leading into Gilbert Regional Park. More than 6,000 residents participated in the public design process, ultimately selecting the Palo Verde concept.
Current Construction Progress
Crews are currently working on several major portions of the project, including:

Installing structural steel, support cables and arches on the pedestrian bridges

Adding decorative railings and shade structures

Completing concrete pavement, curbs, gutters and sidewalks near Regional Park Drive

Installing electrical conduit west of Higley Road

Adding trees, shrubs and other landscaping

Improving the intersection of Ocotillo and Higley roads
Drivers may experience temporary lane or turn restrictions near Ocotillo and Higley while the intersection improvements continue. Police officers may be present to help manage traffic during certain phases of construction.
Some concrete pours are also taking place during the early morning hours because of the amount of concrete needed and the cooler temperatures required to produce the best finished product. Access to nearby homes and businesses is being maintained throughout construction.
How Will the New Road Affect Traffic?
Gilbert estimates that approximately 28,000 vehicles per day could travel along this section of Ocotillo Road by 2040.
When the roadway first opens, it is expected to relieve some traffic from Queen Creek and Chandler Heights roads while creating another route to Gilbert Regional Park. Traffic will likely be heavier during major park events, especially around their starting and ending times.
A traditional traffic signal is not planned at Ocotillo and Freeman Farms roads. However, a pedestrian-activated crossing will be installed approximately 350 feet east of Freeman Farms Road.
When Will the Ocotillo Bridge Open?
Construction began in summer 2024 and is currently scheduled to be completed in fall 2026. An exact opening date has not yet been announced.
Once finished, the Ocotillo Road extension will provide South Gilbert residents with a long-awaited connection between Greenfield and Higley, along with improved access to Gilbert Regional Park.
